Soldiers

A disturbing video. These supposedly crack shots needed five shots to kill a dog from less than 10 paces. And a funny one, in a sort of Richardesque way (I sure hope the puppy was alive, the video wouldn't be nearly as funny otherwise).

Yeah. I'm being insensitive. Being bored isn't a good reason to kill anything. Bored soldiers going around killing things is a disturbing concept. But is it surprising?

You have a bunch of kids. They aren't really smart, otherwise they wouldn't be volunteering to become ordinary soldiers. They mostly come from the lower classes and less than ideal social conditions. Some of them have been expressing anti-social and violent tendencies even before they joined the military. So you take those kids and spend a few months training them to kill and to not think, Keep telling them how shit they were before the training, and how great they'll be after they've been trained to kill and to not think. Then you take them to a far-away land, and set them to killing people who will do their best to kill them in turn.

I'd think that nobody in their right mind would expect those kids, after being put through the afore-mentioned process, to become sensitive daisies who will spend their time writing poems about the beauty of the rainbows. Certainly, nobody with one functioning brain cell should be shocked and surprised that they don't. Apparently, I'm wrong. On both counts.

Still the World of Conan

I feel that my second attempt at blogging a MMORPG is starting off rather nicely. Probably because I didn't make the same mistake as with the first one - namely, begin working on it over a year after I started playing the game. I'm counting on the size of the world to provide the initial material, but it will ultimately have to come down to the player interaction. That will be the making or the breaking point, not just for the blog, but for the game itself.

There is no avoiding the comparison with Eve. Eve is the measure. The 'industry standard' be damned. If I wanted to play WoW, I'd go play WoW.

A note to self... Consult the microwave manual on the details about cooking hotdogs with its grill.

Beer!

On the negative side, I have no idea what bloody day it is today.

Beer!

It is so good when a weekend comes on a Monday...

Bling

One should always go through the newsletters one is subscribed to, even if they've been piling on the top of each other for two weeks. It's always a good thing to find a kindred spirit.

Both Ways

A day to kill meteoropaths. I'll be damned if I take a nap after work, I'll be damned if I don't.

World of Conan?

I suppose that's what they all are at the beginning. Worlds of something. Go somewhere. Kill X of something. Fetch Y and Z of this and that. NPCs with interpunction above their heads.

On the other hand, I spent my first two weeks in Eve mining and running missions... Let's reserve the judgement until I get out of the starting area...

Vapour

Or not.

I also don't have anything to eat. Well, nothing I'd want to eat... And the thought of going shopping horrifies me. No, not because of some weird social phobia I'm experiencing, but because of the amount of stuff I have to buy. But I'll have to go later today... I'm out of beer as well.

And why in the rotten carrot's name am I even awake now?

Almost the time to move to Hyboria...

Turning the Alarm On

I have Thingie the Third. I have Lazy Pole. Now I'm itching for more toys. A new phone, perhaps. I haven't liked the Nokia I have now since more or less the day I got it. More pens. I've started thinking of $100 pens as not expensive, should I be worried?

The Creed

It is quite amazing what haystacks can do... And to what extremes can the social unacceptability of running go.

Why am I posting this from Thingie? The reasons are threefold. Firstly, I have this feeling that my dearest GSM provider has been cheating me, and I need to use my supposedly included-into-subscription traffic to prove it. Secondly, our monopolist telecom company that is holding my DSL connection hostage is exercising its contractual right to withold the services I'm paying for for 18 days a year. And thirdly, it's kind of fun; I should do it more often.

Being on holiday isn't conductive to doing things regularly, is it?

Installment: Three

I think the ideal mobile browser still needs to be found.
