Devine, Not TX

There's a song by a band called Shinedown, Lady So Devine. When I first saw the name, I thought it was a mistake, so I checked. After looking up various sources, however, I was convinced the last word really is devine. OK, thought I, is it perhaps a different way of spelling divine, because that clearly is the word those guys are singing? I checked that, and it turns out that the only thing Devine Dictionary.com knows of is a village in Texas. It's also an Australian housing company, and many people's last name, but none of those things are something one would want to use in the context of that song... Lady so Texan village? I've never been to the place, so I can't say how beautiful/romantic/whatever it is, but is that something anyone would want to sing about a woman?

Therefore, I'm forced to conclude that the only reason the sung-about lady ends up likened to a village is because the song was written by stupid American kids who consider misspelling to be cool. But hey, I'm listening to the music similar to that of a band named Trapt. What did I expect?

Sunny

I've developed a taste for sleeping in the sun. Not just during the day, no, it has to be sunny.

Identity

It's not really a new thing in my thought patterns, but reading an Escapist Magazine article (yeah, the current issue is 138, I'm catching up) got me a bit refreshed on the topic. I love computer games. I have a Logitech G15, because I've always needed more buttons on my keyboards, and my G15 has 18x3+ of them, and I'm miffed that the new version has only six (a nod to, as a friend said, Ritalin-munching console users who get confused by 'too complicated' things). I have a 'gaming' mousepad, but only because it seems to be the choice between that and those useless disposable things everyone seems to be giving away instead of (or with) pens. I have a laptop that's capable of running more than Solitaire, but is also small enough to carry on one's back the whole day. My home machine lives in a case that glows blue, but it's a decent case, and I can't be bothered to pull the damned diodes out. Oh, yeah, I also wear Eve Online t-shirts - but, you know, even my artsy, totally not-interested-in-computers-unless-it's-for-work architect co-worker thinks this is a cool t-shirt. So, while I do buy 'gaming' stuff, I don't do so just because I feel compelled to define myself through that. I am actually more likely not to buy stuff just because some advertising creep thinks I should buy them because I, well, play computer games. But unlike Jonathan McCalmont, I refuse to stop calling myself a gamer just because the advertising creeps have twisted the word to mean a consumerist 'lifestyle'.

I'm a gamer. I also write with fountain pens whenever I can. So screw you, advertisers. You can't classify me.

A Misuse

When I need a pink to be able to sleep properly on a weekend, there is something horribly wrong.

21.2.08

Tea

It would seem that Twinings is killing the Prince of Wales tea on the continent, too... I'm not sure what's more annoying, that or the inflation.

Midweek Tears

As the weather gets nicer, I get... I get... What would be the proper opposite here? The day feels like a Thursday, and it shouldn't, because it's not one, and neither is it a Friday, so at best, I'll have two Thursdays this week.

I should try not to fall asleep today.

Pains of Monday

Yesterday, my right eye hurt. Today, it's the left. Or maybe it's both? I wish I could blame the Monday, but considering what my weekend was like, this is just a continuation.

I think I'll be going to bed as soon as I get home.

Madonna

It's not that bloody cold!

Great Walls of Anti-Fire

Sometimes I want to shoot the good people of Comodo, who made such a nice, but at the same time such an annoyingly stupid firewall...

14.2.08

Deviant

I should've uploaded some of my ancient works sooner. Some photos inevitably attract artistically-inclined (original thought (not fair, but it was there): emo) females (original thought: chicks). Some things, however, were less expected. I suppose I should thank the people who commented or made my pics their favourites...

Now, let's see what happens on Flickr.

Stereo

So there I was, at work, listening to my music, when I became aware I'm listening to a song I had no idea I had, a song I'd never heard before. Then I realised I had only one earbud attached to myself, the left one.

A note to self: use forced mono when at work. Or don't... It was, after all, an interesting experience.

On a different note, I've been pink-free for two weeks. Is that a good thing?

Tokens

After a week, I can say I'm happy with Rosie. It runs Eve in the 1680x1050 resolution just fine (haven't tried any other 'real'games yet), everything opens/starts fairly quickly, the screen and its colours look pretty (in the shade). Two hours tops of real-use battery life could've been better, the screen backlighting is uneven when you don't view it from straight ahead, and the layout of the arrow and associated keys is plain annoying (though I understand more or less standard for laptops), but oh well. Can't have everything.

I also bought a music CD today. A note-worthy event, I suppose.

Paced

This weekend was entirely too short. And I haven't dreamt anything.

Tito

Was Josip Broz Tito a criminal? He was a communist dictator, and during his reign, people were murdered, imprisoned, and persecuted for disagreeing with the regime. Innocent people suffered in the frenzy of the Partisan's revenge that followed the WW2. So in that sense, yes, undoubtedly, he was a criminal. On the other hand, he, and his Communist Party, were the ones who got Croats to fight the nazis and the fascists after Yugoslavia was overrun, while the other politicos either jumped to the opportunity to collaborate (and in the process, become even more zealous butchers than the nazis were), or sat on their asses "passively resisting". It was thanks to him that we, the Croats, were on the winning side when the war ended. It was thanks to him that we avoided becoming one of Stalin's provinces, like the rest of the Eastern Europe.

Now... Should we name our streets after the guy? I think it's sick that we're even asking ourselves that question.

In Appreciation

Friday! Friday!

Little Pill, Little Pill...

Well, the shrink thinks I'm feeling more aggressive, more active, she thinks that means better, and so I'm staying on that horrible concotion. Yes, reboxetine isn't having just side effects, but its adrenalinised highs are followed by lows which I'm not finding pleasant. I don't see that lasting. The exhaustion will come.

On the other hand... The day when I stop being afraid is not the day I start living, it is the day I finally die. Should I be glad for this new chance?

4.2.08

Monday!

I suppose one's really forgotten something if one can't get to it when one thinks of needing it...

3.2.08

Rosie

The new laptop is red (the lid is, that is), so I'm calling it Rosie.

There was once a time when getting a new computer, and especially a new laptop, was a joy. Now, it's hours of drudgery. Reformat the hard drive to get rid of the bloatware. Install the system. Find and install all the drivers. Install software. Transfer settings. Transfer data. Hours, hours, hours... On the other hand, I now have a laptop that's not four years old to carry around with me.

Speaking of the Light of Axim... I had a complicated third person dream. The entire thing was too complicated to remember, but it had two parts, the first being pretty 'realistic', and the second being totally Wheel of Time (it had Trollocs in it). It had two heroes, one of whom built a temple around the end (don't know why), and the other did something completely unexpected (but don't remember what). Annoying as it is that I didn't remember the details, I'm glad to know that I'm still dreaming despite of reboxetine.
