Is It Ugly?

There I am, airing my office, when I hear some people, most likely tourists, coming out from the cafe below, oohing and aahing over the view from my windows (I have two; eat your hearts, you overpaid Americans who for six or seven times my salary work under the neon lights, never seeing neither sun nor sky). How pretty, how beautiful, how nice, they exclaimed! So after my eyebrows came down, I decided to take some pics of the object of their admiration, and share them with the world...

One underexposed, as the camera thought it should be, one properly, according to me. Both bad, but the light at noon doesn't give itself to good snowy landscape photography.

But still pretty, ain't it?

A Balloon Meets a Pin

I feel deflated. It's a Sunday evening, so that's not unusual...

I also feel the need to buy things. Online or off.

I'm Still Alive

Even though yesterday (which is still today) was 29 January. I suppose it was just too cold. And it was the worst day of all. And I had other things to do... A good excuse is worth its weight in gold, they say.

Even Newer, More Improved Than It Was Before!

I think I'm now done. The products of my mind I particularly like now have a page of their own (note the flashing arrow thingie), which should make things easier for both me and those poor creatures who read this...

29.1.05

New, Even More Improved!

As it turned out, and I should've expected this, it didn't work in Mozilla/Firefox. A small tweak (but it took 20 minutes to find out which tweak was necessary) in the CSS file fixed it, more or less. It still stretches the page horizontally when there's a picture in the post, but at least now the content isn't stretched. So I think I'll leave it as it is, and ignore the weirdos who can't use IE like everyone else. :) It doesn't make much difference anyway.

New, Improved!

Well, I sat down, and I searched my code, and I was very annoyed. It turned out that several tags weren't closed, including the body and html tags. Like I said, I HATE TYPING CODE!!!

But now it's mostly done, there are a few things I'd like to add, but the main reason for making a CSS template has been dealt with, and I'm happy.

28.1.05

CSS

Well, I've made a new template. It's all-CSS, it's pretty. And it works. Until I start putting all the Blogger tags into it, that is... That's when things start falling apart.

I HATE TYPING CODE!!

I think I'll leave it be for the time being... And go read Blogger help.

A Thorn in the Memory of Sorrow

As I mentioned a few days ago, I've finished reading Memory, Sorrow, Thorn by Tad Williams. And the first impression is, the book is too long. I've never thought I'd say this of a fantasy novel/series, but here it is. It's not too long in the truly monstrous terms of Jordan's TWoT. It's just that out of four (relatively long) books which make the series, there's three and a half books of inert filling and a half of a book of something significant actually happening. And here comes the spoiler... Which is because the good guys think they should do something, and try to do it, without having any idea why they do it, and that makes everything they do meaningless. When the whys of it finally get revealed in the last half of the last book, the reasons turn out to be the most obvious ones. The resolution, once it finally arrives, is also a cliche one, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if he didn't take so much time getting to it. The character development, especially the main hero's, consists of character being one way, and then the readers being informed how the character has changed, period. The only positive thing which can be said about this book is that some of the (good) characters actually get killed. A sad thing to have as the only redeeming quality, especially when it there isn't nearly enough of it to save the day...

No, this review isn't a shining example of inspiration. Nor is it nearly as venomous as I intended it to be. I suppose I've spent too much time doing tedious paperwork lately...

The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

The first government-certified school of astrology will soon be opening in this country. And I can't but wonder if Miranda Goshawk's Standard Books of Spells and Newt Salamander's Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them will be required reading material...

If anyone knows a country which considers this a valid cause for granting asylum, please let me know.

25.1.05

Brooding 101

When I read of people, imaginary characters even thought they are, doing this or that when their thoughts weigh heavily on their minds, I wonder why I never do something when I'm troubled. Until I really start thinking about it.

First of all, I'm not very fond of brooding rituals. I can brood just as well doing the every-day stuff - sitting in my chair surfing the net, writing (like this), partying (one of my favourites).

Second, I actually do have my rituals, I just don't practice them so often. What else could one call my wild drives up and down mountain roads with the engine turned off (and sometimes without lights at night), the screaming at my beech-tree, the midnight walks through the graveyard and blowing out candles on my father's grave?

My rituals aren't cure and comfortable, like drinking of some special tea from some special cup while sitting in some special comfy armchair. My rituals are reckless and dangerous, full of anger and hatred. I don't listen to meditative music while musing in some warm and quiet place, or walk without umbrella in soft spring rain. I court destruction and vent my ire. No wonder I don't recognise myself in the charming and romantic contemplation of your average literary hero...

It Ain't Natural!

I forgot how dark my hair really is...

It Is Snowing

But I'm happy with my haircut. Even though it's Monday.

The other piece of good news is, I'm finally almost done with Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow, Thorn. The venom-spitting will follow soon.

23.1.05

I need...

...a story. Still. A new one, at least, since the one I have now is boring. At least it'll be over soon.

On a somewhat related topic, I've decided Allastar Dewhurst will be present in person when the Academy gets busted. I still haven't decided who'll die.

I also need... sleep. But that's not something I'll get in sufficient amounts till the next weekend. :(

22.1.05

Growing Up

One friend of mine, a former headbanger, once told me that he's stopped listening to metal because he's grown up. (He listens to that repetitive electronic you-hear-one-you've-heard-them-all stuff now... Although he claims he can tell the difference.)

Does that mean I'm not on my way to grow up quite yet?

A thought which is both heartening and disturbing at the same time. I don't want to grow up, so that is good... But I do age. Which is most unfortunate.

21.1.05

Away, Away

Toy reporting live from its first out-of-town trip... Over a horribly slow (~1 kB/s download) T-mobile GPRS connection. Why are they trying to make me change providers?

Iran!

20 January 21:17 Telecommunication Company of Iran, Iran

I had a visitor from Iran! I sooooo want to go to Iran! I just hope that moron the Americans have (again) elected to be their president doesn't ruin my plans by starting another war...

Also in the news... This blog also seems to be the current top result of the MSN search for 'turkish prostitutes'.

The Bad and the Good

Although I'm still dripping, oozing and leaking, at least it's Friday.

19.1.05

Porco...

Oggi non medito, e non scrivo, perque sono malato. It is somewhat hard to think when one wastes a whole lot of processing power on regulating one's sinus leak.

Ma parlo italiano...

18.1.05

Disturbing

I feel like one of my poems. Well, my mood is perfectly described by it...

When one starts finding meaning in things which one has made to be meaningless, should one start worrying?

GMail Again

I obviously don't know a sufficient number of geeky people. Or, all the people I know are bigger geeks than I am. Either way, I have four (or three - I don't know, and am too lazy to go check right now) GMail invitations to get rid of, and no people to inflict them upon... Anyone wants one?

17.1.05

Oh, Monday...

...how I hate you! There. A decisive exclamation mark. Although, I'm not sure I'm much more fond of the Tuesday to come... I need a Friday. A Friday in May or June, preferably. Warmer weather, longer-lasting daylight, you know. Somewhere away from home, too...

16.1.05

Project Marina

Don't worry, Melita, this isn't another log...

A few things I learned...

1. If a Turk tells you it (and I say 'it') has a large penis, it is lying.

2. To be called a prostitute (or a member of a prostitute's family) by a Turk is supposed to be a very grave insult. It is issued if one refuses to undress for it on cam.

This obvious contradiction makes one wonder what kind of prostitutes they have in Turkey, and if the behaviour the Turks exhibit on the internet is a result of a) the negative attitude Turkish males have towards prostitutes and b) the fact that Turkish prostitutes refuse to even undress for them.

I wish somebody would write a paper on this...

Who Wants To Be the President, Part Two

Two weeks and $11M USD later, this country is about to get a new president. Who, if the exit polls are (again) to be believed, will be the old president. No surprises there. We could've had the new (old) president two weeks and, more importantly, $11M (Eleven Million United States Dollars) sooner, were it not for our minorities in other countries, the 'diaspora'. It's not their tax money that's being wasted, after all. Why are they allowed to vote in our elections, anyway?

I know, I'm simplifying. But we are letting the bloody Bosnians elect our presidents and the members of our parliament. And I don't think anybody but the MPs they elected understands why.

Oh, dear... The Blogger spellcheck suggested I replace 'Bosnians' with 'poisoning'. I am amused...

More Canned Wisdom

"Sometimes questions are more important than answers," claims Nancy Willard. I think she's confusing the importance of being able to ask the right questions with the questions themselves. But when she puts it this way, and one doesn't stop to think about it, it sounds pretty deep, doesn't it?

Blogger

I think there's something seriously wrong with the Blogger post counter...

13.1.05

Canned Wisdom

Even though 'the ability to quote is a serviceable substitute for wit' (W. Somerset Maugham), sometimes the silliness of sayings people go wow and oooh over is simply amazing. Take Cicero's 'Beautiful is rare', for example. I hate to disagree with the old master of rhetoric, but isn't that because it is actually the other way around? Because we get used to things to which we're exposed very often, and stop even noticing them, let alone thinking them beautiful? There are very beautiful, and very non-rare things all around us, we've just stopped seeing them...

Back to Work

The weather is appropriately foggy.

11.1.05

Today in the News...

Almost 30% of Croatians are poor, according to the most recent study by the local Catholic Church. (Or, as the media would say, almost one third; the appalling lack of educated journalists in this country is a well-known issue, but this is rather basic math...) But, I digress... I now feel appallingly rich. Which would be rather nice if I really were. Which I am not. I realise I am not a typical Croatian, with bank accounts always in positive, no loans, who pays for what he buys immediately (and in cash, if that means a discount). But rich? No.

Smarter than the great majority of my fellow countrymen? An appealing thought. If only my fellow countrymen weren't so generally stupid...

Ages Past

Today, I tried to visualise the way between the house I lived in while I was in the US, and the school I went to. And I couldn't. It's all faded away...

I think I've had enough of my vacation... But I'm not quite ready to go back to work yet. Luckily, I don't have to.

Who wants to live forever
With nothing left to hold onto the past that we once knew?

[23:16] 7*******: Interesting male here from the UK, keen to talk to a whitty interesting babe... but yet to discover one... if ou got what it takes to chat with a hot cool guy then msg me back :P

Don't you just love people who're full of themselves, on the internet? And whose unimaginable coolness is shown through the inability to spell properly?

[23:24] Magma: That is one of the most idiotic lines I have had the dubious honour to see. Even the bloody Arabs do it better. Go away.

Magma doesn't. ;)

4.1.05

Project Marina

Here's an example of my unusual rudeness. But considering this guy's persistence, popping up the new message windows on me, even after being nicely told to go away, he got what he asked for.

Session Start (ICQ - 3********:2********): Tue Dec 21 23:51:29 2004
[23:51] 2********: hi:-)
[23:52] Magma: Hi. Busy. Can't talk.

One would think this would be enough...

[23:56] 2********: how are you ?

But it was not. My fault, should've said 'bye'.

[23:56] 2********: we can make strong friendship
but if youwant

Uh huh. A strong friendship with morons is my life's desire.

[23:57] 2********: iam sorry for late

[23:57] Magma: o.0
[23:57] 2********: what's ur name?

[23:58] Magma: The name's Busy Bee. Can't talk, have to buzz around.

Trying to send him away in a witty manner...

[00:00] 2********: my name is hamed

Obviously, didn't work.

[00:00] 2********: how old r u?
[00:02] Magma: ...
[00:03] Magma: Which part of 'I'm busy, can't talk' didn't you understand?

Nice didn't work. Witty didn't, either. How about rude?

[00:03] 2********: sorry go to hell

Yup. Got it this time.

[00:03] 2********: if you said anything i will destroy you

Since I obviously did say something, I am about to be destroyed.

[00:04] 2********: gooooooooooooooooo

Go? Goo? Who knows...

[00:06] Magma: Cute. Moronic, but cute. Please, destroy me, it'll be fun to watch.

Just in case I was supposed to say something in order to be destroyed...

Who Will Be the President

Bah. There will be a second round, and there will be no surprises in it. Stupid Croatians.

Project Marina

I usually don't have a habit of laughing at people's language difficulties, but this guy asked for it. Now, whether it's just his English, or is he naturally stupid, I shan't speculate. I shall, however, politely mask his UIN.

Session Start (ICQ - 3********:2********): Sat Dec 25 22:06:07 2004
[22:06] 2********: Hi
[22:06] Magma: Hi
[22:06] 2********: do you realy from UK?

No, but let's assume I am...

[22:07] 2********: how are you?
[22:08] 2********: Margaret!!!!!!!!!!!!
[22:08] 2********: answer me
[22:11] Magma: Mhm...
[22:11] 2********: what?
[22:13] 2********: maybe I don't like you?

And how the hell should I know??

[22:17] Magma: I'm getting myself some food. Are you in a hurry?
[22:17] 2********: no
[22:21] Magma: OK. I am, I'm fine.
[22:21] Magma: What can I do for you?
[22:21] 2********: just speak with me! :)
[22:22] Magma: I am a bit busy at the moment.
[22:23] 2********: and when you been not busy?

And this is when it gets funny... I'm assuming he's asking me when I'll stop being busy. In retrospect, I might've been wrong here...

[22:24] Magma: I really don't know when I'll be available.
[22:26] 2********: how much time?
[22:27] Magma: A month.
[22:27] 2********: time: hh.mm.ss
[22:28] Magma: 720:00:00, in that case.
[22:28] 2********: I don't understand!
[22:28] Magma: Neither do I.
[22:29] 2********: for example: 0:23 AM
[22:29] 2********: ups!!! 12:23 AM
[22:30] 2********: undestand???
[22:30] Magma: OK... 9:30 PM. What about it?
[22:31] 2********: thanks god!!!
[22:31] Magma: o.0

o.0 is too mild an expression for what I'm feeling... He wanted me to tell him the time in the UK??

[22:32] 2********: you undserstand me!!!
[22:32] Magma: No, I don't.
[22:33] 2********: you send me your local time!!!

And it has made him so happy!

[22:34] Magma: ...
[22:34] Magma: I really, really need to be doing something else. Bye!

Again, in retrospect, a bad decision. Who knows how funny this could've gotten, considering the way it began?

[22:34] 2********: what is this?
[22:34] 2********: bue
[22:34] 2********: good night
Session Close (2********): Sat Dec 25 22:35:00 2004

Who Wants To Be the President

Today, Croatia elects her President. If you go by the real authority the Croatian President has, and it is that of a very expensive potted plant, a rather insignificant event. Of course, in the best local political tradition, the entire thing, campaign especially, has been turned into an amusing farce. Thirteen candidates, from the current president Stipe Mesic and the popular Government minister Jadranka Kosor, to a leader of a Hare Krishna cult and a stupid, arrogant, stupid university student (why do young people in this country try so hard to create a public image of stupidity and incompetence?) who doesn't even know what the President of the Republic is. As one journalist wrote, two candidates and a folklore group. The worst thing is, the entire circus costs the tax-payers some $11M per round (two are possible). Enough money to run a school for almost 9 years (or 18, if there are two rounds), so the most important decision the voters can make is how much of their money is to be wasted.

BBC, however, thinks differently. According to them, these elections will decide the direction the country will take in its approach to the European Union, because the main fight will be fought between the current, pro-Western president Mesic, and the conservative (the way they say it, I suppose they mean xenophobic and nationalist) candidate Kosor. It seems they're wrong on both counts. First, the President, our the most democratic institution, doesn't have the powers to decide the colour of the walls in his office, let alone the foreign policy; despite of what the Constitution says, that's really the Prime Minister's and the Government's domain. Second, if the exit polls are to be believed, the second round, if, carrot forbid, it comes to that, will be between the current president and an outsider nobody took seriously, Boris Miksic. An unexpected and heavy blow that would be to the ruling party... If that really happens, it would be interesting if Miksic won in the end. He's a successful American businessman, has spent almost a million of his own dollars for the campaign, and I really, really can't understand his motives for trying to get into the Croatian politics. Can it be that he's simply crazy?

Be as it may, I shan't be holding my breath, or lose any sleep waiting for the results. Whoever wins, nothing will change.

Happy the Arbitrary Beginning Day!

Best wishes, blah, blah, blah. You know the drill.
